Indeed Hi-Fi Laboratories announce the release of their X-16 valve-driven headphone amplifier and digital-to-analogue (DAC) converter.

The X refers to X-Ray, a cheeky take on the transparent quality of the sound; the 16 refers to the year of its development: 2016. This marvelous product is the result of a joint manufacturing effort by two companies: SMSL, who made the DAC section and Indeed Hi-Fi Laboratories, who made the valve amplifier stage. This X-16 is the successor to the G2 and G3 models which, although just headphone amplifiers, were well received and well reviewed. Newcomers to the delights of valve sound invariably report the same experience: the sweeter sound of the music in the treble range; the more coherent mid-range, and the more-firmly defined and deeper bass.

The X-16 provides all these. A sense of a three-dimensional sound stage is also commonly felt, compared with the more two-dimensional presentation common with transistor amplifiers. Details of the technical specifications are given below. Here, we can note the various developments over the previous G3 model. Most obvious is the earthed black casing.

This addresses the issue of interference from other, nearby, electronic devices and, at the back, allows for the provision of a range of input and output options. These include provision for MP3 processing and a switch facility to soften the hard edge that MP3 treatment typically gives to analogue sound in its wholesale dumping of audio information in the conversion to digital artifacts. Quality components include Wima capacitors, metal oxide film resistors for lower distortion and a ceramic socket for the double-triode valve, with gold-plated slots for the pins. Aficionados of valve rolling can opt for either very good Russian valves or NOS (New Old Stock) Chinese valves (made many years ago, never used and literally brand new). All are burned in for 24 hours.

Analogue frequency response is an amazing 5Hz to 30KHz, + or 0.25dB. Volume is controlled by a generously-sized knob attached to a low-noise, metal film potentiometer with a performance quality that rivals Alps equivalents. Distortion has always been the bane of full power valve amplifiers powering floor-standing speakers: figures of 3% and 4% are common.

This is not an issue with this lower-powered valve-driven headphone amplifier and DAC, where distortion is typically one tenth of those figures, or less, because the volume is so much lower. Typical figures for a range of conditions are given in the specifications. In addition, a relay delay protection circuit is built into the on/off switching, thus avoiding loud thumps in the output, protecting your ears. The X-16 is powered by a 24 volt DC mains adapter which has been fully-shielded with RF noise discharged to ground; mains hum will not be discernible.
